Under Personal Links I put in a link to The Big Con which Robert McClelland put together.
I particularly liked:

February 14: Scott Newark, a man who once said, "the charter helps only
murderers, pedophiles and judges," becomes the senior advisor to
Minister of Public Safety, Stockwell Day. Newark also becomes the chief architect
of the Conservative's border defense policy.

I remember during the debates, conservative fans would lift up framed pictures of the Charter Of Rights and Freedoms. So I think mainstream conservatives would be pretty surprised to learn that far right members of their party despise it with a passion. It isn't like Newark is the only conservative who despises the Charter. Now the Charter obviously has flaws but to change it is a huge hassle as Mulroney (and the rest of Canada) figured out with Meech Lake and Charlottetown which destroyed our party system. Makes you wonder where Harper got this bright idea. Good luck for him because he will fail.
At least, Harper doesn't equate pedophiles with judges who both are part of some evil Liberal plot on Canada.
