This man had the nerve to break with the ideological rigidity of the Glorious Canadian Fatherland Conservative Party. This is certainly big news- but it could become a whole lot bigger and this was hinted at in today CBC's news. He is getting courted by Elizabeth May. What if she entices him into her party. He does seem to hold somewhat progressive environmental beliefs compared to his former party's environmental party. His moderate fiscal conservative position fits well within the Green Party. This will also expose the Green Party as a conservative party in many respects which May might want as to make her party seem more accessible to right wingers. I cling the belief that Green Party is not as conservative as the Liberals but time will tell.

Garth Turner is well liked in his riding now esp. since he picked up a lot of support by publicly denouncing Emerson's defection. I'm sure a lot of people within his party weren't too stoked that Garth did not get a cabinet post. After all he was one of 2 conservatives MPs that has previous federal cabinet experience. On that alone he should have had a spot but Harper doesn't care about that as he's more concerned about Garth’s ability to think independently.

I think that if Garth switched to the Green Party he would be easily re-elected in his riding on personal popularity alone. The day before his Night of the Long Knives Garth talk highly of his meeting with Elizabeth May and said that the next 48 hours will show whether Rona and the government can put together a comprehensive plan against climate change.

Well that 48 hours are almost up Garth but you can still change that Green movement in Canada forever if you become it's first MP. If he turns green I guarantee you that the Green Party will win seats in the next election. Godspeed Garth.

As a Postscript read Garth's account of that day- its awesome how the CPC went around to eliminating that garthcancer in their midst.
As a Post-Postscript dont you think that Garth Turner and Bill Blaikie were seperated at birth.

Garth and Bill

Get In The Game Jack

So I was reading this interview of Jack Layton for the Simon Fraser University newspaper. The interviewer is the owner of the right wing Filibuster Cartoons website which I frequent because I generally like his work. I thought the interview was pretty good for the interviewee and the interviewer. Jack had some pretty interesting remarks- you can tell he is mulling over announcing a plan to put our natural resources (i.e. oil and gas) under public ownership again. But I think he just slipped one question- this one was asked as a follow-up to a previous Afghanistan question:
OP: But don’t you think that the people who are attacking would oppose the
presence of any foreigners at all? For terrorists, they don’t see it as a matter
of soldiers versus humanitarian workers, they just see it as foreigners, and
foreigners have to be blown up and killed. So regardless of whether or not we
are fighting or just building hospitals or whatever, the people who want to kill
them will continue to attack, so long as any foreigners of any sort- no matter
how well-intentioned- are in their country.
Jack goes on to say he disagrees with this and talks about how complex Afghanistan is and ends up with some point about the Russians. Weak Sauce!!!! weak sauce Jackie boy. Ok so here the interviewer sees a bunch maniacal frantic terrorists who hate us for our freedoms in Afghanistan. Its pretty easy to demolish this misconception with one well placed counter example:
Médecins Sans Frontières have never pulled out of a country before. In fact they were in Afghanistan during the brutal 10 year Soviet occupation, and the slightly less brutal 10 year civil war between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance. This was at time (if you follow logic cause the Taliban controlled 90% of the country) when evil Taliban terrorists were the most numerous and powerful. And there was no problem. Because humanitarian organizations don’t pick sides but then when the US army rolled in they started changing the rules:
“The violence directed against humanitarian aid workers has come in a context
in which the United States-backed coalition has consistently sought to use
humanitarian aid to build support for its military and political ambitions. MSF
denounces the coalition's attempts to co-opt humanitarian aid and use it to "win
hearts and minds." By doing so, providing aid is no longer seen as an impartial
and neutral act, endangering the lives of humanitarian volunteers and
jeopardizing the aid to people in need. Only recently, on May 12, 2004, MSF
publicly condemned the distribution of leaflets by the coalition forces in
southern Afghanistan in which the population was informed that providing
information about the Taliban and al Qaeda was necessary if they wanted the
delivery of aid to continue.”
In the same press release they annouce that they are leaving Afghanistan after five of their colleagues were in a clearly marked van and executed by Taliban. This never happened before but you think it would if the Taliban were crazily bent on killing every white person they saw. And it seems the Taliban's justification for the murders would further prove MSF's contention that having the US military coflating themselves with humanitarian organizations does no good-
"Organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières work for American interests and are
therefore targets for us."

Elizabeth May Speech

As you can guess from the title I saw Elizabeth May speak- she is the brand new leader of the Green Party. I was pretty impressed with her speech. Keep in mind I'm not the greenest guy as I'm all about using the land because I learnt to love the outdoors from ranchers and loggers. And in high school half my friends were NDP like me and the other half were Conservative and we would all rag on the one green guy (that’s you tbooth). But her speech was full of substance (unlike any of the other party leaders) and made me look at climate change in a completely different way.

I know the Green Party tries to be like we are more than the environment but May's entire speech was about the environment with slight detours into the Environment Ministry's bureaucracy and a bit about nuclear proliferation. She was focusing mostly on her progress in getting heard in the House of Commons (she scored a tight diplomatic seat) and a lot about Rona Ambrose's recent environment announcement. She thinks Rona is the worst environment minister mainly because she is smart so she’s effective at misleading people. On several areas she completely lied how credits were used in Kyoto she is being called back to the committee to account for them. I liked it how Rona talks smack about those "Liberal targets" but no this is an international binding treaty not some sort inept evil Liberal ploy to eat your babies and give money to French people.

A couple things about climate change stuck with me. One was that Conservatives try to separate Smog from Greenhouse gases which makes no sense- why not hit two birds with one stones. Perhaps more importantly Canada doesn't need a Clean Air Act (Harper announced he will introduce one in after a year of consultation) because we already have the tools to crack down harder on smog thru Mulroney era legislation. She also made the important observation that Kyoto is just the first baby step. And how we can't make 6% of 1990 levels even with loopholes while Europe and Japan can make 8% and hell England is close to 20%. California is saying screw you Bush and is aiming for 80% by 2030. She gave us a great statistic- all the people in California had to switch to energy efficient fridges recently- this saved more power than that which is produced by every American nuclear reactor put together. Even more striking was when she described climate change not as a dial getting progressively worst but rather as a switch. She talked about the possibility of in twenty years the Gulf stream shutting down or Greenland's ice sheets melting which would rise sea level by 7 meters because we are just making the world hotter but rather changing the chemistry of the atmosphere. Both of these events would be devastating and fundamentally alter the way we live (imagine every costal city on Earth under water or no more food in Europe cause its too cold).

She also has good points about getting rid of the new (10 years old) corporate culture in civil service and restore competency to the bureaucracy especially in science related areas. She had a good point about the NDP and Bloc bashing only the Liberals last elections- corruption is a big deal she said but it doesn't affect my child's future like climate change.

This was all really interesting and impressive- I went from being very skeptical about the Green Party to thinking seriously about joining the party. One thing almost ruined it for me. You see whenever I hear a politician (doesn’t matter what party) speak I'm like that’s bullshit. This didn't happen with May until her last paragraph when she mentioned North Korea and Nuclear Proliferation. She goes on to say that Canada is part of the problem because we gave nuke reactors to Pakistan and they gave them to North Korea.

What a huge piece of bullshit- if that was true it would be on the cover of every paper in this country. Ok we gave CANDU reactors to India and they promised they wouldn't use the weapons grade plutonium byproduct for nuclear weapons- they were lying. Now they certainly didn’t give it to Pakistan or North Korea. And before tonight I've never heard any person claim Pakistan gave nuke related stuff to North Korea. This is how North Korea works out:

1994: Cut a deal with Clinton so IAEA inspectors come into their nuke plant where the plutonium fuel rods are pulled out.

2001: White House claims without proof that North Korea has been enriching uranium.

Jan. 10 2003: Amid massive Iraq build up NK serves notice that they are pulling out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

March 17 2003: Eve of the highly illegal butchering of Iraq, NK kicks out IAEA and sticks in plutonium fuel rods.

2004: They invite Siegfried Hecker the former director of Los Alamos to check out their nuclear program. They proudly show him enough plutonium to make over 10 bombs. When he asks to see their alleged uranium enrichment program they tell him they have no reactor for it, no materials, no funds, no scientists and therefore no program.

2006: NKs drop the Bomb and somehow the world is surprise. Hell I wasn’t because I knew in 2003 that Kim has taken advantage of Bush being in Iraq cause he told us. I knew he had weapons grade material because he told us and showed us.

So that kind of pissed me off but I can let that go cause I know she doesn't have a staff to check things out and I cannot use that one misconception to ignore her very very valid and pertinent message on Climate Change. I got to meet her as well- I just managed to mention that I ran against her party as a Marijuana Party Candidate but that her party's Marijuana policy was the best of the four major parties. (I don’t like how in their scheme marijuana remains a federal matter and how it would be taxed- hell it should be completely a health issue instead of justice so it would be under provincial control and people should just be able to grow it on their own without having to go to some bullshit government store.) She seems very genuinely happy to meet me and I thanked her for the great speech. She was very accessible had a lot of integrity although personally if she gets any seats she will start getting corrupted and compromise her principles. Happened to the CCF/NDP and the Green parties of Europe.

But if you can go see her then please by all means go ahead- you will not think the same about the environment again.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention when May was talking about how biggest problem with meeting Kyoto targets was the Alberta Tar sands. A guy in the front was like what would you do about the Tar sands and she bravely tackled the question head on and said she agreed with Peter Lougheed (Former P.C. Alberta Premier) and the Fort McMurray city council that there should be a moratorium on Tar sands development because Alberta is not necessarily benefiting from it- certainly not as much as it can be. There is the obvious example of Fort McMurray which is a living testament to every wrong with the Alberta boom- no housing, high crime, pollution and rampant environmental destruction. Then there is the simple fact of the sweet heart deal for the oil companies. Up till very recently Alberta had the smallest royalties in the entire world- a mere 1%. The Federal Government also gives the companies a 1.4 billion dollar tax break. That’s right every Canadian subsidizes the Alberta Tar sands and Albertans still manage to be against equalization. Also these oil companies don’t pay for water rights. The Athabaska is already at record lows and Alberta is going to feel a water shortage in 30 years. And of course there is the obvious fact that oil development is not particularly good for the environment especially when the Alberta Tar Sands pollute not only Alberta but also Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Since I always unreservedly thought that the Tar sands were the best thing since sliced bread these revelations certainly got me thinking differently about this.

Woot Back in Action

Finally getting things together for the new school year. Recovered after working the summer treeplanting in Thunder Bay, Ontario and in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Topped it all off with some urban restoration in Brampton. Getting back into the whole politics gong show. I just read for example that the Cons are doing some cutting in the spending department. And to my delight John Baird's example of wasteful spending was a 4 million dollars gift to research medicinal marijuana.

Personally, I think that a great move- why the hell should Canadian taxpayers spend 4 mil so we can find out something we already know. The Courts have repeatedly demanded that Health Canada start providing medicinal marijuana because people need it. Health Canada responded with stonewalling and putting together a terrible program that hardly a 1000 people joined. Come on now, California has 100,000 people in their program. Many American States have a much better program then any jurisdiction in Canada.

But personally I think medicinal marijuana is bad compromise because I like many Canadians believe that every person in Canada should have the right to smoke marijuana without the fear of persecution.

But don’t stop at a 4 million dollar cut Baird, how about you stop persecuting marijuana smokers and you'll save 400 million dollars at the minimum. Possibly you'll get 1.5 billion dollars back. And if you regulate and tax this 7 billion dollar industry you could net a cool 2 billion dollars. (Though mind you I would prefer if people could just grow their own without it being taxed to death.) But given that the Cons are big government type people, they would love to get their hands on that tax base- too bad their brains are fried with half century old reefer madness propaganda.

Goodbye For a While

Moved into a new place in Peterborough so it is pretty damn hectic. I going to swing by BC with my girlfriend for a week to see my bros and hopefully some old friends. Than after that I got a summer full of tree planting for Brinkman- first in Thunder Bay, then Alberta and then back to Ontario to get the summer plant. My T-Bay contract is unionized so I'm stoked for that- 10 dollars a day in camp fees instead of 25 and min 9 cents per tree which is also pretty good. Should be pretty damn hardkore stylez.

I'm sure the news of the Canadiens winning the Stanley Cup will reach the North at some point. Although this season I'm not planting in Hearst where those francophones would probably all be Habs fans.

Peace out

Playoffs Tonight

Now the team that will win the Stanley Cup is now playing tonight but it should be interesting to watch the Sens play the Bolts and the Flames play the Ducks. I guess I wont be able to see the Oilers destroy the Wings but I'm sure I'll read all about it.

But without further ado the team that will win the Stanley Cup:

With that Frenchman Heut in net we can't lose since the Canes like to give up a lot of goals while Heut doesn't. He's even a real Frechman- the only one in the NHL. And we got Ryder- easily the best newfie to play since ... ever. And Kovalev, Koivu, Markov and Higgins will be on top of their game with Peterborough boy Bob Gainey coaching them.

That may be a bit optimistic of course but I think a Canadian team will win the cup. Why am I so confident you ask? We have a Conservative government- you may not think it matters but let's look at the data:

1980-1983

Stanley Cup winners: New York Islanders all 4 times

Government: Majority Liberal

1984

Stanley Cup winners: Edmonton Oilers

Government: Ok still Trudeau but the Oilers victory was simply fortelling the massive 84 conservative sweep.

1985

Stanley Cup winners: Edmonton Oilers

Government: Majority Progressive Conservative

1986

Stanley Cup winners: MONTREAL CANADIENS beating the Calgary Flames

Government: see above

1987

Stanley Cup winners: Edmonton Oilers

Government: see above

1988

Stanley Cup winners: Edmonton Oilers

Government: see above

1989

Stanley Cup winners: unfortunatly the Calgary Flames beating the Montreal Canadiens

Government: see above

1990

Stanley Cup winners: Edmonton Oilers

Government: see above

1991-92

Stanley Cup winners: Pittburgh Penguins win back to back and is the only American team to win the cup during the Mulroney regime.

Government: see above

1993

Stanley Cup winners: MONTREAL CANADIENS beating Gretzky's Kings

Government: A conservative cacus about to be destroyed and be the only party ever to achieve gender parity (one woman and that french guy who is now the priemer of Quebec)

1994

Stanley Cup winners: New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks in 7 games bah

Government: Majority Liberal

1995-2003

Stanley Cup winners: Avs, Devils, Wings, Stars etc. no Canadian teams make it to the final

Government: Majority Fiberal

2004

Stanley Cup winners: Bolts but needed 7 games to beat the upstart Calgary Flames

Government: A soon to be a not a Majority Liberal

2005

No hockey undoubtable because of too many years of the Liberals

2006

Stanley Cup winners: Probably Canadians beating the Oilers in 7 with Sens and Flames being obvious underdogs

Government: A somewhat stable Conservative minority

It can clearly be seen that having a Conservative government has a direct correlation on who wins the Stanley Cup. This is probably why the Rhino Party in BC were atempting to merge with the Conservatives in order to not split the silly vote.

Happy 420!!!!!!!!!!!

420 is a day for all who love freedom to rejoice.

Ah... It was broad daylight and our nicest day of the year so I figured he must be looking to fly in on some marijuana tokers lying in their backyard- not that I have done that recently :-D

I can't think what else he might be doing- chances of a serious crime happening at noon on a weekday in daylight are somewhat slim.

But check out this Israeli television ad done by the Ale Yarok party. I think it shows the police and the law's reaction to marijuana fairly well.

Of course my favourite Ale Yarok tv ad is this one. [WARNING: Conservatives it depicts the breakdown of Western civilization as we know it- do not show it to children.]

To finish on the police subject:

An anarchist is anyone who doesn't need a cop to tell him what to do - Ammon Hennacy

Iran (again)

This is why Irani leadership is playing nuclear chicken with the United States:

Angered by unpaid salaries and generally low wages, workers in the northern Iranian provincial capital Rasht blocked streets and protested in front of government offices a fortnight ago brandishing banners that read: "We are hungry!" It wasn't the first time that thousands of employees at the country's largest state-owned textile factory had laid down their tools. But this time they were joined by dam workers in the western province of Elam and employees of a pharmaceutical factory in Tehran. Recently, workers have also gone on strike against harsh work conditions and impending layoffs in mines and petrochemical plants across the country, with hundreds of coal miners from the northern province of Gilan protesting the fact that they have not been paid for 13 months. Workers were also on strike in the car factories of the Iran-Khodro company, already the site of a massive work stoppage on last year's Day of Social Welfare and Securities (July 16), when strikers demanded the introduction of a minimum wage.

In Iran just like the rest of the world, people get pissed off by right wing neoliberal policies of their rulers. Money that should go to books and food or possibly breasts goes towards bombs. It is not like it is any different in Canada. Iran really needs a scary international situtation to distract people's attention from the homefront and denounce those who opposed their regime as traitors. -Sounds a little too familer eh? It pisses me off when a blogging Tory calls NDP MPs socialists or even worse Liberal MPs. Hell if the NDP was a socialist party than I might think about rejoining them but the fact remains that the NDP is certainly not a socialist party. This is not to say that there are not democratic socialist, or even Marxist members of the NDP but they have no leadership role. Exceptions being the Fightback entryism tactics of the Alberta Youth NDP.

The debate now is whether the NDP is a liberal party or a social democratic one. The NDP has not necessarily embraced neoliberalism yet like many of their social democratic European sister parties or like the Green parties. But we can be sure that Jack Layton would love to be a Canadian Tony Blair if it meant he could capture government.

Many conservatives and to be fair many well meaning leftists call the NDP socialist but forget that we live in a capitalist system. To paraphrase Marx the government is the executive branch of capitalism. This rises an important question over whether socialism and workers control and ever be achieved through Parliament because the government works for business. Business by and large controls the media so it will always broadcast a right wing economic message. Canadian examples of the federal government clamping down on radical provinical populist governments include not allowing the right wing Social Credit to print their own money in Alberta and not allowing the left wing CCF to do changes to banks and unsuccessfully trying to stop the first North American Farm Security Act in Saskatchewan.

I recently wrote an essay where I basically argue that CCF moved rightwards from their famous 'eradication of capitalism' (last paragraph) manifesto in an effort to gain government thus abandoning the mass movement behind it that was not all that concerned with party politics. No matter how right the CCF got the media was never on it's side. This continues to this day with the NDP. Just read any Sun paper and you will be surprised to learn that NDPers are fervent socialists. Now the journalists are well educated so they probably know they are lying but they use the term as a smear because socialism is never explained. When it is the explanation will be- it is like the USSR or China now. Well the USSR was brutal state capitalist exploitation and China is the most capitalist place on the planet with its huge reserve army of labour.

If socialism was explained as worker's control so instead of every dollar you make your boss makes five, you would get all six dollars; people might have a slightly different opinion than.
Here is a good article that explains how all 5 major parties support capitalism albeit in different ways.

Check This Out

Cathie From Canada has a good summery of the Iran situation. But I am still not convinced the Bush administration is that idiotic. The Irani people are largely pro-American with a anti-American government (this is the complete opposite of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.) Most Irani reformers such as Shirin Ebadi are very opposed to any American attack because the hardliners would just be like- see this is where pansy liberal appeasement has gotten us with the United States.

Most conservatives love nuclear power so I am not sure why they are against Iran having a legal and peaceful program. I mean 30 years ago Cheney, Wolfowitz and Rumsfield all saw the need for Iran to have a nuclear program. The main difference I can see is that American companies no longer stand to gain billions of dollars from a Irani nuclear program.

Iran's leaders may be uber right wing which probably explains their full support of the war in Afghanistan and their preference of Republican administrations over Democratic ones but at least they haven’t started any pre-empted invasions of any countries lately. If the Bush administration stops being stupid then the Iranian leaders will lose nationalist support and their 'national security' calls will lose much of their credibility. It is only a matter of time until the Iranian will lose the theocratic part of their democracy. But most of them probably won’t want the sort of democracy that allows American companies free rein in Iran. That might be hard to do- the last time they had a nationalist democratic government it was overthrown by a CIA backed coup leading to the Shah. Apparently a secular dictator is what the States are looking for.

For the conclusion here is a blast from the past.

Deja Vu

And I thought that Harper and co. were trying to distance themselves from Bush.

Of all the reasons for Afghanistan this is the most convoluted:

"Events in Bali, Madrid and London have all showed how vulnerable we are to terrorism," he said. "Must we wait for terrorists to appear in Vancouver, Montreal or here in Ottawa before we recognize the very real threat that they present to our security?"

The logistics of Taliban warriors attacking Ottawa would be interesting to say the least. We are not even fighting the Al-Qaeda anymore but rather Taliban remants blocking our oil pipeline who happen to be slightly right of the ruling theocrats in Afghanistan.

Anyway I degress:

(Click on strip for a larger image)

I so wish I was on that parliament debate floor so there would be at least one antiwar voice. The NDP sounded hella weak- quibbling over whether our troops are under American command or NATO. NATO is an American dominated military alliance- they seem to have forgotten when they did not support NATO back in the day. Back than NATO had a purpose and now it desperatly searches for meaning in a world of no Warsaw Pact, Soviet submarines, or big scary Russian tanks. Tribesmen with rusting AK-47s simply dont inspire the same sort of fear.

Anyway I got to study for my Canadian history exam tommorrow. Interesting history it is: a century of the free trade and pro American Liberals versus the protectionist anti American Conservatives.... well at least until Mulroney stirred the bucket a tad - he was good at that for better or worse.

Debunking Reefer Madness

So I stumbled upon a post at Tory Thoughts who does not take too kindly to at least five million of his fellow Canadians:

All you pot smokers and supporters, don't even bother to comment on this post.
If I had a say in the matter, I'd have you all locked away for life.

That was his conclusion of course. From what I figured out what he had three main points against marijuana:
- A Manitoba teenager has been charged with manslaughter as he was DUI with marijuana.
- It is more carcinogenic than tobacco.
- The big one was that it permanently alters your mind- for the worse.

He gave no link for the Manitoba DUI and I could not find it on Google, Google News or Technocrati. The main thing I want the link for is to see if the teen had any alcohol in his system. Most people who have marijuana in their system in DUIs have either been drinking or they aren't stoned. Marijuana can theorically stay in your body for over a month (similar to Vitamin A) so it is very hard to determine when the accident is directly attributable to a person smoking marijuana. It is the same with cell phones I believe (there are efforts to ban the menace of cell phone DUIs).
That being said DUI is a bad idea- hell driving a car in the first place is bad idea but hey they are a necessity in most people's lives. But let's see what the experts say about drugged driving:

Dose-related impairment was observed in drivers' ability to maintain steady lateral position. However, even with the highest dose of THC, impairment was
relatively minor - comparable to that with blood-alcohol concentrations of between .03 and .07 % and many legal medications. Drivers under the influence of
marijuana also tended to decrease their speed and approach other cars more cautiously. [Website Source] [US Government Study Footnote]

I love the last sentence eh that is probably why marijuana is not a major factor in fatal accidents:

A 1994 study sponsored by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involving analysis of nearly 2000 fatal accident cases, found 6.7 % of drivers positive for marijuana. In more than two-thirds of those, alcohol was present and may have been the primary contributor to the fatal outcome. [Website Source] [US Government Study Footnote]

And one more Canadian content eh?

The safety hazards of smoking marijuana and driving are overrated, says U of Tresearcher Alison Smiley.
Recent research into impairment and traffic accident reports from several countries shows that marijuana taken alone in moderate amounts does not significantly increase a driver's risk of causing an accident -- unlike alcohol, says Smiley, an adjunct professor in the department of mechanical and industrial engineering . While smoking marijuana does impair driving ability, it does not share alcohol's effect on judgment. Drivers on marijuana remain aware of their impairment, prompting them to slow down and drive more cautiously to compensate, she says. [Website Source] [Academic Source]

Okay so I would not DUI but I can not stand scare tactics that exaggerate the effect of cannabis on drivers. For shits and giggle check out this video.

Now onto the tobacco cancer thingy. I think every schoolchild knows the statement: Smoking one joint is the same as smoking 4 (or 5) cigarettes. Let’s take that as true- although it is very subjective (like how big is the joint). Cigarette smokers inhale a lot more cigarettes on a much more consistent basis. So their risk is already much greater. That is probably why tobacco kills over 45,000 Canadians per year (over 20 percent of all deaths in Canada). And there has never been a recorded death due to cannabis in the 5000 years of recorded history. But let’s tackle the assumption that marijuana smoke causes hardcore lung damage.

"Findings from the long-term study of heavy, habitual marijuana smokers
argue against the concept that continuing heavy use of marijuana is a significant risk factor for the development of chronic lung disease."

"Neither the continuing nor the intermittent marijuana smokers exhibited any significantly different rates of decline in lung function as compared with those individuals who never smoked marijuana."

The study concluded: "No differences were noted between even quite heavy marijuana smoking and nonsmoking of marijuana." [Source- has academic
footnote]

This is probably because marijuana smoke does different things to your lungs than tobacco:

Since 1982, UCLA researchers have evaluated pulmonary function and bronchial cell characteristics in marijuana-only smokers, tobacco-only smokers,
smokers of both, and non-smokers. Although they have found changes in marijuana-only smokers, the changes are much less pronounced than those found in tobacco smokers.

The nature of the marijuana-induced changes were also different, occurring primarily in the lung's large airways - not the small peripheral airways affected by tobacco smoke. Since it is small-airway inflammation that causes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, marijuana smokers may not develop these diseases. [Website Source] [Academic Footnote]

So hopefully that quashes the myth of marijuana being more damaging to your lungs than tobacco. The best thing is that numerous studies have failed to find a link between cannabis and cancer.

Well now onto his last and most disproved claim- that cannabis permanently damages the brain. This is a reefer madness flashback. Tory Thoughts mentions studies but is very very vague as he does not give links, quotes, names, dates or institutions perhaps because he is thinking of 1960s era reports that are now mostly regarded as junk science riddled with bias.
Hell the latest studies suggest that cannabis use encourages brain cell growth:

A synthetic chemical similar to the active ingredient in marijuana makes new cells grow in rat brains. What is more, in rats this cell growth appears to be
linked with reducing anxiety and depression. The results suggest that marijuana, or its derivatives, could actually be good for the brain. [Website Source] [Academic Source]

But we have to debunk his claim a little more:

The most celebrated study that claims to show brain damage is the rhesus monkey study of Dr. Robert Heath, done in the late 1970s. This study was reviewed by a distinguished panel of scientists sponsored by the Institute of Medicine and the
National Academy of Sciences. Their results were published under the title, Marijuana and Health in 1982. Heath's work was sharply criticized for its insufficient sample size (only four monkeys), its failure to control experimental bias, and the misidentification of normal monkey brain structure as "damaged". Actual studies of human populations of marijuana users have shown no evidence of brain damage. For example, two studies from 1977, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed no evidence of brain damage in heavy users of marijuana. That same year, the American Medical Association (AMA) officially came out in favor of decriminalizing marijuana. That's not the sort of thing you'd expect if the AMA thought marijuana damaged the brain. [Website Source- Academic Footnote is at the bottom]

So the above information is why I think Tory Thoughts is severely misinformed about cannabis. But the good thing is that his fanatical hatred of marijuana users puts him in a tiny minority within his own party. Since only eleven percent of his own party believe marijuana possession should be punished by a criminal record. Hell even a Tory MP openly prefers the legalization of cannabis over prohibition.

I remember talking to a member of the Conservative Party who was close to 50 and said he had smoked marijuana for almost every day for 30 years and without it he would not be able to do his heavy labour job that most men half his age have trouble doing. Too bad members of his own party believe he is a dangerous threat to society and should be imprisoned for life.

New Link

Under Personal Links I put in a link to The Big Con which Robert McClelland put together.
I particularly liked:

February 14: Scott Newark, a man who once said, "the charter helps only
murderers, pedophiles and judges," becomes the senior advisor to
Minister of Public Safety, Stockwell Day. Newark also becomes the chief architect
of the Conservative's border defense policy.

I remember during the debates, conservative fans would lift up framed pictures of the Charter Of Rights and Freedoms. So I think mainstream conservatives would be pretty surprised to learn that far right members of their party despise it with a passion. It isn't like Newark is the only conservative who despises the Charter. Now the Charter obviously has flaws but to change it is a huge hassle as Mulroney (and the rest of Canada) figured out with Meech Lake and Charlottetown which destroyed our party system. Makes you wonder where Harper got this bright idea. Good luck for him because he will fail.
At least, Harper doesn't equate pedophiles with judges who both are part of some evil Liberal plot on Canada.

Congrats to Rhode Island

The Ocean State has allowed a medical marijuana program to be started. It is a beginning although it's interesting because there is no provision for growing marijuana or having the state provie marijuana.

Canada has a dismal medical marijuana program. Canada has 1100 registered marijuana users while California has well over 100,000- possibly over 150,000. It is pretty disgusting how our government continually disregards court orders stating that they must improve their program. Either we have to improve our system or simply outsource it to non-profit compassion clubs who already have a much better system than Health Canada.

During campaigning I met many people who need marijuana for their health. Several of them did not use marijuana until they tried it to help their illness. One young woman had bi-polar disorder and found all the medicine she tried had devastating side effects- one sent her to hospital. Marijuana was the only medicine that didn't give her debilitating injuries. This was same case for a man who needed it for back pain - all the prescribed medicines just caused more pain. Worse thing is that their drug plans (no drug plan that I know of) does not cover marijuana so they have to pay much more than other drugs and become criminals in the process.

One lady talked about her 70 year old friend that wanted to score some weed because of her cancer but could not find anybody to buy from. This what our government does- it forces elderly women to not receive the medicine they require.

Marijuana has been used as medicine for at least 5000 years. That's a lot longer than the synthetic chemicals the great God that is Western science has created for us. Marijuana was the pain reliever of choice during the 19th century and was replaced by aspirin in the 20th century (this is where drug company conspiracies come in). Hell even Queen Victoria used marijuana to relieve her menstrual cramps. And hey we get drunk on her birthday here in Canada for some reason but perhaps it would be more fitting to celebrate Victoria Day 420 style.

But watch this space for further information. I am going to try and set up a compassion club in Peterborough. It will probably be a mail order affair where people come and give me orders and I send for it and than give it to them. At least, at first, but if it gains widespread attention and support than I will probably shift to storing on site.

Surprise! I have practically stopped watching CBC because they are about our Afghanistan adventure. Now back in the day, I was one of those right wingish guys fighting the liberal hegemony on society so I was all about Afghanistan and Bush. The catalyst that shifted me from the right to the left was the war in Iraq. I read about the possibility some time in 2002 in Time and I laughed out loud. I'm like Bush is not that stupid, Iraq doesn’t have any WMD and American/UN sanctions are killing thousands of Iraqi children every month. I lived in Saudi Arabia about 5 minutes from an airbase and in 1998 I remember a lot of planes going to bomb Iraq. Of course I vastly over estimated Bush's intelligence.

So from than on I have questioned pretty much everything the government stands for and this led me to our military adventure in Afghanistan.

We are there for two reasons: one is stated and the other is unstated.
The one that we talk about is FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY.
Notice how Osama or even Al-Qaeda is never mentioned anymore. So we aren't even fighting terrorists who attacked America but people who used to harbor them.
So the Taliban eh? We are fighting them than. Ok but who are we fighting for?
The Northern Alliance.
Who are not very innocent when it comes to human rights abuse.

Its role will be to monitor and safeguard human rights in Afghanistan. But since the fall of the Taleban last November, commanders from each of the three factions of the Northern Alliance have been accused of atrocities.
"Our research found that Pashtuns throughout northern Afghanistan are facing serious abuse, including beatings, killings, rapes, and widespread looting," said Peter Bouckaert, senior researcher for Human Rights Watch. [Source]

But what about the women we liberated:

No radical changes have so far been made over the past three years to improving women's condition. Creating a Ministry of Women and Independent Commission for Human Rights and installing apolitical and pro-fundamentalist women to a few high positions heals no wounds. It would bear no significant value unless there is a reliance on the true representation of women.

Basically, it is an elusive dream to expect even a minor positive change in
the condition of women until the warlords who continue to suppress people in their dominated territories by using guns, force and dollars are no more. The whole country should not be judged on the basis of a few changes seen in Kabul. And nor it be concluded - as is being simplistically viewed by the Western media - that "Afghan women have acquired freedom" while a mile away ill-fated girls like Muska burn themselves from destitution. [Source-RAWA5]

I won't even bother linking to the now famous and recent case of the Afghan Christian convert who got out of the death penalty for converting because of international media attention so they ruled him as insane to look good. So basically we are backing a bunch of fundamentalist Northern Alliance warlords who have put in a strict Islamic theocracy. Now do not get me wrong Canada has back Islamic theocracies in the past. I.e. Saudi Arabia with death penalty for converts, gays, and drug users and the Sudan government but hey our oil company is there. But this is the first time that Canadian soldiers have fought and died to uphold the rule of an Islamic theocracy. But you say I can not believe that we could support a government that engages in human rights abuse.

Well we don’t give a shit about human rights:

During a meeting Friday in Ashgabat, President Niyazov invited Oman and Canada to participate in oil and gas projects in Turkmenistan. He identified construction of Trans-Afghan Pipeline (TAP) and modernization of Seyidi refinery as two likely projects where Omani and Canadian firms could take part.

... Turkmen president noted that Canadian companies had participated successfully in construction of LPG facilities in Turkmenistan. Considering the rising demand of LPG worldwide, Niyazov remarked that Canadian firms could increase their presence in this sector.

Jean Chrétien is advisor to the Bennett Jones, a Calgary-based law firm specializing in energy issues. He is also consul in another law firm Heenan Blaikie. In addition, Chrétien is international relations advisor to PetroKazakhstan Inc., an energy firm based in Calgary with major interests in Kazakhstan and Caspian. [Source]

So we deal with Turkmenistan eh?

"Headed by president-for-life Saparmurat Niazov [sic], Turkmenistan remains one of the most repressive and closed countries in the world. Regressive government policies in education, culture, and health care caused increasing concern in the international community. ... [T]he overall human rights situation in Turkmenistan remains dismal."-- Human Rights Watch, Jan. 18, 2006

This brings us to the unstated reason: OIL. At this point some people may be thing what a moonbat thing to say. Well let’s look at the facts. We do now that Unocal wanted to build a trans-Afghan pipeline in 1997 to bring Caspian oil out to ports in Pakistan to feed the hungry West. Now it gets a little fuzzy at this point but this man may or may not have been an employee at that time:

Oh Hamid Karzai you are such a Renaissance man. For a very good article dissecting whether or not he actually worked for them go here. Ok but lets get back to that Trans-Afghan Pipeline:

"TAP will be constructed alongside the highway running from Herat to Kandahar, and then via Quetta and Multan in Pakistan.
... construction of the Turkmen part is supposed to start in 2006, but the overall
feasibility is questionable since the southern part of the Afghan section runs
through territory which continues to be under de facto Taliban control."

Hmmm... Kandahar sounds very familiar. So our troops happen to based in Kandahar and they are attacking Taliban in the area which needs to be secure so a pipeline can be built to ensure a profitable supply of Caspian oil. Not just American companies of course- Calgary based PetroKazakhstan Inc.

Ok so we are supporting a repressive Islamic theocracy while securing an area vital for an oil pipeline. You might say wow a pipeline would be great because the people of Afghanistan get to reap the benefits. But the Afghan government will get 8% of the royalties. 8% of that much actually gets filtered down remains to be seen. The other 92% will go to Western oil companies. I think that is bad. Some people may not but I think it’s a bad and we should not be doing it. So aside from this fundamentally flawed and wrong nature of the mission it is also conflicted and confused. Other reasons cited for being in Afghanistan are: humanitarian and stop the drug trade.
Humanitarian than. Our soldiers are NOT peacekeepers and they are NOT relief workers. Their job is to kill people. Don't believe me? Maybe this guy will convince you:

"We're not the public service of Canada," he said. "We're not just another department. We are the Canadian Forces, and our job is to be able to kill
people."- Gen. Rick Hillier

What do humanitarian organizations think of troops in Afghanistan.

There are also direct and tragic consequences for those trying, against the odds, to make Afghanistan a better place to live that again resonate gravely with the situation in Iraq. Between February and March this year, 11 Afghan aid workers were murdered. Five of them worked for a Christian Aid partner
organization. Three surviving staff members said that their Taliban attackers had accused them of being US agents.

The politicization of aid is exemplified by the actions of US combat patrols in the south of the country, as reported in the US press. Lieutenant Reid Finn led one such patrol searching for Taliban insurgents. To do so, he used force against civilians – demanding information on his quarry with menaces, tying up suspects and raiding family homes. At the same time he used inducements in exchange for information – showering the same communities with ‘humanitarian’ gifts, such as blankets and food. Lt Finn was disarmingly blunt about his methods. He said: ‘The more they help us find the bad guys, the more good stuff they get.’141The Politics of Poverty

War and Humanitarian efforts do not mix very well. Afghans associated aid organizations with the American military that drag blind men out of there house and bombs wedding parties. Military get in the war of humanitarian work especially when money goes towards shooting people rather them ensuring reconstruction. Now how about that drug trade. Everybody recognizes it as a problem:

UN officials say fears are high that the country will degenerate into a "narco-state" and have voiced concerns of the strong links between drugs and
terrorism. President Karzai has said fighting drugs is his top priority for the next five years. [Source]

But wait the Afghan government wants the drug money:

Powerful drug lords are being encouraged by the Afghan government to invest their illegally earned profits in the war-shattered country, according to the governor of the top opium-growing region. [Source]

Well that was exciting wasn't it. but I'll wrap it up in a couple of sentences: We are not there for democracy and freedom, rather a repressive Islamic theocracy; the real reason is a need to secure the area for oil companies. Militaries kill people, and our presence hurt the humanitarian effort we are supposedly helping. And the Afghanistan government can’t decide whether it wants to stop the poppy trade or profit off it.

Random Links:

Top Ten Under-Reported Facts on Afghanistan

Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA)

Defend Malalai Joya!

Factsheet on Afghanistan

Canadian Peace Alliance

Now, it is not good for the Christian's health to hustle the Aryan brown,

For the Christian riles, and the Aryan smiles, and he weareth the Christian down;

And the end of the fight is a tombstone white, with the name of the late deceased,

And the epitaph drear: 'A fool lies here who tried to hustle the East.'

-Runyard Kipling

Check Your Math Peterborough This Week

Apparently a rural farm was siezed and had 20 pounds of marijuana shake valued 'on da street' at 2.5 million.
This confused me a lot- first its shake not bud -who’s going to get away with selling that.
Second lets assume they made a mistake and it was in fact bud. Let say they sold all twenty pounds in one gram dime bags costing 10 dollars apiece.
On that premise let’s do the math:

10 times 28.5 (amount of grams in an ounce)
=285 dollars per ounce
285 times 16 (amount of ounce in a pound)
=4560 dollars per pound
4560 times 20 (supposed amount of marijuana 'shake')

=91200 dollars

Wow that’s a discrepancy of over 2.4 million dollars good job in showing the huge profits criminal overlords make in the illicit cannabis industry. To be fair Peterborough This Week probably got that figure from the police. But the problem is that the paper has acted as propaganda mouthpiece for the police force but uncritically accepting their math.

To be even fairer the clipping also talked about 2500 plants being stolen. Though I did get the impression that the 2.5 million dollars came just from the shake. But if you do the math assume they got 3 Os per plant and got 2000 dollars per pound you get a little over 900,000 dollars.
Its easy to see how wildly the math differs between how much weed is yielded from a plant and whether a person can hypnotically sell 450 pounds in dime bags.

That is one of the ways the police manipulate the scary factor of marijuana farms. Of course they will no longer have to bust gang controlled farms when marijuana is legalized. Kind of like there is not any major rum running rings down to the States anymore since booze has been legalized.

Ah... Our New "Justice" Minister

Mr. Vic Toews (Provencher, CPC):

"Many people view marijuana as a harmless drug. We could speak to virtually any drug addiction counsellor. Marijuana, especially with the THC content that it has now, is an extremely physically addictive drug. There is no debate about that issue any more. It is an addictive drug. I do not know on what scale it is addictive, whether it is the same as heroin, cocaine, crack or crank, but the guidance counsellors and addiction counsellors say that it is addictive."

More bullshit big government scare tactics. I love it- this goes to show that the Conservatives are just a likely as the liberals to ignore the 1972 LeDain Commission and the 2002 Nolin Senate Report which recommended marijuana should be legalized. Let’s hear what they have to say:

"There has never, in history, been a good reason presented for marijuana being illegal," said Banks. "It's fundamentally important for people to understand that it's never been based on the facts. It's non-toxic, it's not addictive and has no provable, long-term irreversible effects."- Senator Tommy Banks, Deputy Chair of the Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs.

"Scientific evidence overwhelmingly indicates that cannabis is substantially less harmful than alcohol and should be treated not as a criminal issue but as a social and public health issue." - Senator Pierre Claude Nolin, Chair of the Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs, during the press conference for the release of the committee's report.

"The continued prohibition of cannabis jeopardizes the health and well-being of Canadians much more than does the substance itself." - Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs, 2002. Summary P. 45

Vic Toews chooses to ignore two years of research by our own Canadian Senate and backs discredited 'Super Bud’ theory. This theory basically states that the THC content in weed is increasing therefore it is inherently worse then the cannabis available in the 60's. Well the higher THC content the better- think about- the higher THC, the less weed one has to smoke to get stoned and you are inhaling less smoke.
Anyway the average THC content of weed is probably between 10-15 %
The scary "BC Bud" (The crack cocaine of marijuana) is no higher then 25%
THC content of hashish is 30%
THC content of hash oil is 70%

Now look at those figures. Humans have been smoking hashish for at least 5000 years of recorded history. So let’s not worry about some new 'Super Bud' epidemic. In 5000 years of history there is no record of a person dying from marijuana. In contrast in 5000 years of peanuts and coconuts you would find deaths from these very dangerous substances- allergies and hey falling coconuts are heavy. People have died from the Pill, aspirin and many other prescription drugs while booze and tobacco kills people everyday. Weed is not even toxic.

Go here for the source of the above graph. You can see that you have greater potential to get addicted to caffeine then you do to cannabis. And you experience greater dependence on nicotine then you would on heroin or cocaine.

But just like the Liberals, the Conservatives will ignore the facts and rely on fear to enforce the unenforceable prohibition on cannabis which costs taxpayers between 1 to 1.5 billion dollars. That's several sponsorship scandals every year for the rest of your life. This reveals the complete absence of any sort of Libertarian principles on part of the Conservative Party.

I'm getting the papes to start up a Marijuana Party riding association in Peterborough. People who love cannabis or just love freedom must unite if we are ever to get the state to stop pushing us around.

VICTORY!!

Well 485 votes seems to be the final call which is .77% of the vote and good enough for a fifth place out of six. Pretty damn good if you ask me- I tooled my Dad’s 1975 Ontario provincial total of 204 when he was running as a Libertarian candidate. It just goes to show how popular the Marijuana Party is as a fringe party. We had really good results around the country last night but Ed cleaned up in Nunavut by beating the Green Party and getting 8% of the vote.

UPDATE: Student Vote Results for Peterborough:

NDP: 1283

CPC: 1188

MARIJUANA PARTY: 782

LPC: 711

GPC: 702

BOB: 120

And I won the vote at Kenner and got several strong second and third places in other schools.

People would not have thought about this issue if we were not around. 60,000 people would not have seen the word Marijuana on the ballot. By simply running a candidate in every riding and presenting another choice we can become even more significant. This is not the end by rather the beginnings of the Marijuana Party in Peterborough. I'm planning to set up a riding association and possibly looking into operating a compassion club. From talking to people, Peterborough could really use one. I have been thinking of running in a student union election- our student movement needs action if we are to succeed in stopping the Lib/Con slashing of our education funding.

And I'll recommend that everybody should run for parliament- voting for yourself is perhaps the most satisfying thing ever.

You get a lot of respect for your fellow candidates as well. I was impressed by Linda's (NDP) results- an over 6% jump with over 5000 more votes. I was observing a poll counting for the area around London, Aylmer and George- Linda got 152, Diane- 66, Dean- 30, Brent 25, ME- 3 and Bob grabbed one. Brent (GPC) got 3162 votes which missed his 2004 total by 20 though that is still a really good showing. Too bad for Diane (LPC) but I guess it is Dean's (CPC) time to shine. Well congrats to him and hope he represents Peterborough well in Ottawa. I live in hope that he will represent the students and marijuana users as well as he will represent suburban homeowners. And Bob did a great job too- it’s even harder for independents because they have no party structure to help them out and to attract voters. If I wasn't running then I would have voted Bob and his dedication to direct and participatory democracy.

And a big big thanks to everybody who voted and everybody who contacted me it’s been a great time but I’m glad this election is over

The 'Other' Issues

Believe it or not I realize that there are political issues besides Marijuana:

Accessible Education- University tuition fees at least back to 1990 levels (2500 in today dollars rather then 5000). Similar reduction if not elimination of college fees. Work towards universal education and fight any loan based approach to fixing to education such as the Income Contingent Repayment Loan schemes. (ICRLs)

Green Economy- Industrial Hemp is an amazing plant and must grow to play a major part in the textile, construction, pulp and paper, auto parts, foods and biomass fuel industries. Because of government fears of 'crop substitution' the industry faces heavy regulation and licensing. Bring the subsides hemp got in the 1920s so it can be part of our future sustainable economy.

Bring The Troops Home- As per a 2002 Senate recommendation- all Canadian troops should be returned home from overseas so we can rebuild our armed forces rather then patching it up every other month. Out of NATO- The Cold War was over 15 years ago we don’t need to be part of a American dominated military alliance ‘defending’ Europe from Soviet tank divisions that aren’t there. Before taking military action to defend our artic, launch circumpolar negotiations with all nations on the Artic Circle to settle border disputes.

Living Wage- Minimum Wage should be raised to 10 dollars an hour so that the lowest possible wage is above the poverty line. Fight any union breaking 'labour laws' put forth by the Con/Libs like their pro-scab legislation.

Proportional Representation- is necessary to distribute parliamentary power more evenly- no longer should 38% of the vote get you 100% of the power. Change the unaccountable party system where leaders can make decisions over the heads of their membership.

Eight Reasons to Vote for the Marijuana Party

1. Like 53% of Canadians you believe that marijuana should be fully legalized.

2. You don't understand how our government can ignore all the facts about cannabis for over 80 years and continue to criminalize a herb so useful, and less harmful then booze and cigarettes.

3. Like our Senate you believe that the prohibition of marijuana is more harmful then the drug itself.

4. You know people who need marijuana for a sickness but have to became 'criminals' to obtain their medicine.

5. You don’t see much point in voting for any other party because they are unaccountable and have no real interest in major change.

6. You are a student and have seen tuition fees more then double in Ontario over the past 15 years. We need to reduce university fees by 50% to return to 1990 levels adjusted to inflation. College should be free and accessible to all just like Quebec.

7. In our changing climate today you see the need to sustainable industry and fuel. Industrial Hemp is extremely useful in fabric, construction, rope, auto parts, foods, and as bio mass fuel yet is tied back by extensive government regulation and licensing.

8. Simply, you would rather vote for weed over corrupt parties who spend millions of your dollars to get re-elected. (I spent less then 150 dollars)

So there, Stand up for Weed. This Time Marijuana Party.

What IS the Marijuana Party?

Cannabis Facts Canadians need to know

VOTE!!-Register at Elections Canada on Charlotte St really close to George.

Ahhh... Good Ol' High School

So at PCVS I got pulled aside. They wanted to make sure I did not say that alcohol and tobacco are worse then cannabis. They didn’t want marijuana mentioned at all. But I put it in my intro though it was a poverty debate so we stuck to that. It worked out fairly well I think. At least PCVS invited me whereas Holy Cross did not.

I got a phone message from a Holy Cross student who really wanted me to come. And I am really sorry man but not only did your school not invite me- they barred me from going on your campus at all. Since the debate is not public I can not even go into the audience. But if you email I would be stoked to meet with Holy Cross students. Like PCVS, Holy Cross used the excuse- we have very impressionable kids and this is a sensitive issue. Alright at least my drug policy does not foster disrespect for the law and promote organized crime like the Lib/Con policy.

I was impressed at PCVS though- Brent (GPC) complained to the organizers about my muzzling right away and Linda (NDP) said she would complain after the debate. I'm sure both will complain to Holy Cross.

I'll write about last night Social Policy Debate later but now I have to write to the Arthur and go to Fleming.

                                                                            Theft

My only real sign in Peterborough got stolen today. I figured something like that would happen but still it pisses me off. I spent over twenty bucks to make that sign and I hand painted it which took me a couple of days to do. I always get mad when I see Dean signs dinged or the occasional Linda one. But you know they are the big guys.

According to Elections Canada you can spend up to 85,698.61 dollars on the campaign if you are running in Peterborough. Since I got my party to pay the 1000 dollar deposit I am legally obligated to spend less then 200 dollars. I get no money from my party, I am not rich so I can not afford anything more then 200 dollars anyway and nobody I know is in the position to give money for this campaign.

So I'm just the little guy here, going to school, and trying to bring an issue to the election debate. But apparently some people do not respect that. I have not any of them personally- a lot of conservative, liberals, NDPers, and greens have congratulated me on running. I understand people hate all the candidates and I encourage you to go to the election booth and reject your ballot. Anyway I have a debate tonight- time to compete with the DeanMobile, Linda posters, full colour Diane brochures, and hey even the green party can afford pamphlets and lawn signs.

Anyway the sign is 5 foot long, 2.5-3 feet high, bright green with a white Marijuana Party logo at the top left. VOTE AIDEN at the top and MARIJUANA PARTY at the bottom. It was nailed to the fence at the corner of Parkhill and Dennistoun really close to Water. If you see it give me an email- Thanks eh.

Well I've let off my steam- I am not going to let it get to me any longer. Peace.

On The Trail

I have been to my first three debates. I have gotten a lot more positive response then I thought. Even some conservatives have congratulated me on running and a couple more said my ideas are interesting. People are interested by the potential of hemp and how similar the cannabis prohibition is to the failed booze prohibition. I also did a radio interview on Tuesday. It will be part of two shows on the next two Sundays about Youth voting on KAOS 99.5 FM. I don’t remember the time though. And there is a short clip on me, Brent, and Bob on CHEX tonight at 6pm.

Apparently I got good radio response from the debate at St. Peters Secondary School. I thought that was pretty interesting that Dean (CPC) spend a good deal of his speech attacking my program. But that’s good because he would not have spent any time discussing it if I was not there. I also got three questions from grade school students so I am glad I got WEED into our federal election debate.

But Dean used a suspect statistic- 95-96% of all marijuana grown in Canada goes to the States. I did not have opportunity to respond but I did sort of in the evening debate. But here is information I got from Cannabis Facts

FACT: "Canadian-produced marijuana accounts for only approximately 2% of overall U.S. marijuana seizures at its borders." - U.S.-Canada Border Drug Threat Assessment, Oct. 2004

FACT: Mexico supplies about 46% of the U.S. demand for cannabis. - United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (UNDCCP) Global Illicit Drug Trends 2002

FACT: "Most of the marihuana available on the American illicit market still originates primarily in the U.S. and in Mexico. Canada ranks far below Mexico as a source for the U.S."- RCMP report:, "The Drug Situation In Canada - 2003"FACT: "The U.S. are basically their own main source of marihuana."- RCMP Report: Marihuana Cultivation in Canada, Nov. 2002

FACT: "Marijuana transported from Canada clearly amounts to only a small percentage of all marijuana smuggled into the United States."- From a 2003 U.S. Justice Department report

The myth that there is a huge marijuana trade south of border is just an excuse for the Liberal and Conservatives parties use as a reason to enforce prohibition. The same excuse is in play with the Con/Lib talking point that US Federal Government will be mad about Canada decriminalization. Well ok they might be ticked but what are they going to do- in North America- individual American States lead the way in decriminalization. Twelve states covering 33% of all Americans have decriminalized marijuana. Eleven of these states have much better decriminalization programs then the proposed Liberal one.

Both Dean and Diane (LPC) brought up the gateway drug theory. Obviously the idea that when you try pot you’re hooked into the drug world is bunk. But there may be some truth to that but tobacco and booze are also gateway drugs and a person's personality is a factor.
But hey I have toked marijuana and the hardest drug I have done is Canadian Rye Whisky- followed closely by tobacco. And the only other drug I have done is caffeine but I don’t do much caffeine because I don’t want to get hooked. :-D

One other point Dean brought up what that you may not do harder drugs after smoking weed but you'll end up doing nothing. Well some of the five million Canadians who have smoked marijuana just might find that offensive. The students, business people, clergymen, artists, engineers, retirees, farmers, cooks, labourers, and other workers in blue and white collar jobs who run for office under the Marijuana Party banner across this great country may also find that offensive.

Stuff is Going Down

Alright I have been invited to several all-candidate debates. But I see it differently and I believe many are tired of our political system. As Gaetano Mosca said "No matter what the form of government the universal fact is the rule of the many by the few." Social mass movements have been taken over by the political party- labour movement by the NDP and the environment movement by the Greens.

The Marijuana Party is not like that. Every member can endorse whoever to run as Party Leader endorsement letters are given out on request. Riding associations are as independent as possible. There is only one goal of the movement and thus the party which is to legalize marijuana. This belief is compatible with many political leanings- from right wing Libertarians, to left wing Socialists, to centrist Greens and to the fringes of the old statists- Liberals and Conservative.

So one would vote for me to protest the system and fight the power and tyranny of the major parties. There is no bigger protest then voting for a party dedicated to overturn a law which both major parties have spend so much effort to enforce while the NDP and Green timidly step around the issue.

PROTEST THE BIG PARTIES!!

Why else vote for me? I am a student and I like to think of myself as a student candidate- There are none of us in the House of Commons even though we number in the millions. As a member of the Canadian Federation of Students I support many of their findings. That is that you have to lower tuition fees to lower student debt.

The Liberal Finance Minister though out the 1990s cut Post-Secondary funding every year while record budget surplus were piling up. This tripled student debt from 8000 to more than 25000. In ten years this right wing cabinet minister doubled average tuition fees from 2000 to 4000. If the increases had been limited to the rate of inflation the fees would have been at 2451 dollars in 2002. The minister cut 3.3 billion from education in ten years while giving the wealthiest 10% of Canadians 41 billion dollars in his 2000 budget.

This Liberal got a promotion and now is our Prime Minister giving 12 billion dollars to our military while won’t give a cent to student unless the NDP twists his arm.

Education is a right and I will fight for free post-secondary tutition for all.

FIGHT FOR THE STUDENT!!

This summer I was a tree planter which is hard piece based work without the benefit of a union. Unions and Labour are critical to stop government cuts in wages and job protection and to stop union bureaucrats and the NDP from compromising workers rights. Case in point is the recent BC teacher's strike. They lost because union leaders did not listen to their membership call for a general strike and their illegal strike was not supported by the NDP. The Union movement is about as democratic as you can get in this country and thats why big business and big parties fight them. Well I will fight back!

FIGHT FOR THE WORKER!!

The Prohibition of the cultivation and use of cannabis a symbol of everything the government have done wrong in the pass seventy years. Prohibition has cause organized crime to grow unabated while doing nothing to protect the marijuana consumer. The causal consumer harms no one while the legal drinker and smoker have damaged many with alcohol related violence and second hand smoke. We have the power together for once the people are united we can never be defeated.

LEGALIZE CANNABIS!!

For if we can do that we can....

LEGALIZE REVOLUTION!!

VOTE FOR THE MARIJUANA PARTY!!

VOTE FOR AIDEN WIECHULA!!

How You Can Help

1. Vote in the Upcoming Election.

If you are a student or not yet registered all you have to do is register for this riding.
